Restaurants around the Gare du Nord or Gare de l’Est stations have generally been the ones I tried to avoid all these years, they just look touristy and the menus are quite generic, not to mention inflated in prices. This time around I did my due diligence by researching first since I knew by the time I’d arrive, it will be late and too tiring to head elsewhere for supper! Apparently Terminus Nord Brasserie is the odd shop out, it having started serving decent seafood and their famous Charolais Steak Tartare since 1925 and gradually building up a reputation as a reliable institution for incoming London travelers. An alternative option, will be for the more adventurous travellers who don’t mind traveling to the back side of the station along Rue du Faub. Saint Dennis and grabbing some cheap Pakistani food I suppose?
It’s Huge,
And you can tell the staff are proud of their restaurant and food.
It almost has the feel of an institution.
Fresh Oysters -
It’s still coldish here so I guess oyster season has extended slightly.
Most oysters are from Normandie.
Good sign that this isn’t touristy?
Most people around you are speaking French.
Grimbergen Beer (draught) -
Similar to a Belgian Abbey beer in style,
this was sweetish but has a nice malty aroma. Very good.
Cold Bread -
And it was actually a little stale and becoming hard to tear apart.
Steak Tartare is mixed in front of the customer -
Before being plated by the staff.
Charolais Steak Tartare -
Using a French bull’s breed as often found in prestigious Hong Kong Michelin restaurants, Charolais beef is more common in most restaurants in Paris. This steak hache was quite minced up and after mixing with the sauce and herbs, was starting to be slimey. This might be acceptable by Paris standards but I think most Asians would prefer it to be more chunky? I remember having less wet versions though. On the other hand, at least there is no floating WHITE liquid showing up in the hache, a recurring problem often spotted in a tartare in Hong Kong, but not anywhere else in the world. This phenomenon has always baffled me ~ 6.5/10
Receipt and Prices -
The stated Menu Prices actually includes the additional surcharges to be paid,
which is a plus, for there are no more hidden charges. The steak tartare was not bad, and it’s possible that their other foods can be decent. They also open until late, which is convenient. Edible.
