丼丼亭 Don Don Tei [Hong Kong] - Tempura Donburi from Japan for HKD $60

There is a big influx of imported Japanese restaurants into Hong Kong these past 1-2 years, but as a foodie I am lately finding it stressful to dine out and splurge out thousands of dollars per meal every time, and even with some invitational events - I usually decline those offers that are priced out of range for the laymen. So occasionally I think I should write more about cheaper options in town to balance things out. Don Don Tei in Hung Hom is from Osaka originally, and despite being run by the Café de Coral Group, I found that the quality has improved from its beginning.

Tempura & Onsen Tamago Tendon Rice 「月見天丼」 HKD $60 -
The batter and overall taste became better actually, the 関東 East Kanto Japanese style Tenyu sauce is more accurate nowadays in terms of sweetness vs savoriness and viscosity.. With a piece of Prawn, Kisu Whiting Fish, Onsen Egg and a variety of Vegetables, at $60 it is a bargain in Hong Kong.

Tempura Hiroshima Oysters - HKD $28
The oysters were still plump and huge after frying. At $14 a piece, it's decently valued too. I always have a craving to come back here if it wasn't out of the way for me from HK Island Side..

Don Don Tei -
It's still a bit under the radar after opening 1 or 2 years ago, but there's currently two outlets in Hong Kong and this visit was much better than my previous visit.  I mean of course if you want a proper Tempura Omakase Course there are plenty of options at around HKD $1,000 to $1,800 a person, or you can fly to Japan too for that money on HK Express or Vanilla Air.  I walked out of here satisfied for HKD $88 as a daily meal and it doesn't even incur any 10% service charge.
