皇冠小館 Wong Kung - (Macau)

  This shop is one of the very few outlets still adhering to tradition and using a bamboo stick to manually beat their own noodle cakes.   Having been covered on TV shows and magazines numerous times,  I have got to say the taste of the noodles here is not bad but not exceptional compared to the best noodles in Macau!   The hype also comes at a price,  you pay a colossal premium for both their congees and noodles here,  it is almost 50%-100% more than surrounding shops.  *Update:  This shop has just received a mention in the 2013 Michelin Guide.

Wonton and Prawn Roes with Hand Crafted Noodles -
This looked pretty at least!   Good news 1st,  the wontons have a good mixture of pork and shrimps,  they were actually decent.  Bad news is that the prawn roes were not as flavourful as they look,  and the noodles were also kind of bland in taste.  There are numerous shops in Hong Kong and Macau serving better quality roes and noodles.     6.9/10

Soup:  made of Flounder, Pork & Chicken Bones,  Prawn Roe,  Prawn Shells -
Having been to almost all the most famous noodle shops in Macau multiple times over,  my general verdict is that wonton soups in Macau aren’t as good as the Hong Kong competition.  This shop changed my opinion as this soup was clear and had all the advertised seafood flavours.  Good job indeed but at a premium once again  ~  8/10

Chili Paste -
There are 2 types of chilies eaten with Wonton Noodles in Hong Kong.  One is a redder chili sauce used in Cantonese-wonton noodles.   This fried chili paste in chili oil is more of a Chiu Chow style.  The one here was decent but wasn’t as fragrant as some of the best versions I have tried so far.

Noodles were overall decent rather than truly great -
The soup and wontons impressed.  But not so the noodles and prawn roes.  And at $60,  you can get better quality stuff at other Macau outlets which averages between $30-40 and they are just around the corner from here.   Try Luk Kee,  Lo Kee,  instead.

  1. Oh yeah I remember this place on Ah So's show (there's also a video clip of that episode uploaded to youtube, probably associated with the restaurant). The crab congee sounds interesting, but similar to any celebrity food critic (or in the USA celebrity food chef), the food is only unusually good when they visit. Do they use chicken eggs in their noodles? It's a lot lighter than the golden brown ones in some other shops (duck eggs?)
