Be On Canton is the latest new outdoor space adjacent to Three on Canton buffet restaurant. In this open spatial area part of Marco Polo Gateway Hotel, it’s confounding to discover that a hotel decided it is trendy to also provide Shisha smoke and Electronic Shisha to their customers. Lots of respect for taking this approach and it could well backfire, but from my point of view at least I was super excited at this prospect. The new food and cocktail menu at Be On Canton are also trend setting and hovers between traditional Spanish tapas to modern Japanese and Chinese. There is also a Buy-1-Get-1 Free Happy Hour between 5-8pm woohoo..
Wow -
In between a Hotel and a Shopping Mall Office.
Just look at that color and spatial context..
In Hong Kong, you probably won’t find anywhere else designed like this space.
With Fire Place -
This is totally Outdoors without any cover of sorts whatsoever. So on a really rainy or even slightly drizzling day, one can imagine they won’t receive a lot of business. It’s a bold concept but hopefully it will pay off. Real Respect
Can’t say I don’t love this Space -
Just look at it. Shisha pipes juxtaposed to a real fire place,
can’t say this idea isn’t unique!
Roast Beef at next door Buffet Restaurant -
Couldn’t help to notice, how the next door’s Three on Canton Roasted beef looks so legit.
Japanese Martini -
Made with Gin and Sake instead of Vermouth. When this arrived, I was like why do the little yellow strips in the glass remind me of Japanese daikon pieces? It actually turned out they WERE Takuan daikon strips. Wicked. And it is Dry. ~ 7.5/10
Iberico Bellota Charcuterie, with Aniseed Tortas – $138
With assortment of Jamon Iberico Paleta, Chorizo, Salami and Lomo loin. Initially I thought there could be more of the actual prized Jamon ham, but looking at the menu this was really priced well. The side crispy tortas were really good and herby. Liked the pickles too. ~ 7.5/10
Aburi Sushi Platter – $158
Seared Jamon Serrano sushi, Salmon and Scallop sushis with tobikko roes, bonito flakes and red ginger. Actually this didn’t really worked for me for some reason. It wasn’t really the quirky combination of flavours, but may be perhaps it wasn’t torched enough to bring out the real aroma I expected. ~ 5/10
Teppan Seared Foie Gras &
Australian Stockyard Beef with Mirin, Soy Sauce and Honey – $168
This was really good value for money. The searing bit was spot on, but personally this was a little too sweet. The sauce was almost teriyaki like but even sweeter, but the beef and gras flavour was there so it got covered up a bit by the strong sauce. Promising. ~ 6.9/10
A Strawberry based Cocktail -
It can be lethal because it’s such an easy drink..
Southern Fried Chicken with Garlic Mayo – $98
The chickens are flash fried to create a breadcrumb coating, then finished off in the oven to thoroughly cook thru and retaining moisture. This was decent but I think could be more moist in the end, although others were happy with it. As an increasingly hard to please and out of control food snob, you don’t have to trust my judgment. It is probably quite decent by average standards indeed. ~ 7/10
Mint and Green Apple Shisha -
From memory this is just around $200 and includes 2 pieces of charcoal inclusive.
This is actually quite a good bargain, considering this is in a hotel context and most of the Shisha bars in Central charges another 50% more. And this space is much more cooler.
Electronic Shisha pipes – $80 each
Another surprise find here at Be on Canton.
These electronic shisha pipes are free of tobacco and contains 500 puffs within. It’s pretty cool at only $80 and makes for a fun night.
Duck Spring Rolls with Mango Salsa – $148
These were fried well, although I expected more duck meat. However the amount of veggies inside made these more healthy and the side of mango salsa was actually really complementary. ~ 7/10
I really loved it here -
The whole space and vibe, the immaculate and thoughtful design. The whole Shisha theme beside the Marco Polo Hotel which manages it, and even the cocktails were engaging. Food wise, they were priced accordingly but could do with some minor tweaks. This would be one of my top picks in Tsim Sha Tsui area if I wanted to chill-lax, and here’s hoping for great weather to sit outside.
