Chan Gan Kee is a Dai Pai Dong stall located in far away Sha Tin district, inside the housing complex known as one of the oldest apartment villages called 禾輋 Wo Che. If not from the help of some local foodies, I would have no idea this even existed! The food is sold at a bargain price and everyone only needed to chip in $60 HKD in the end, but the quality and execution of many dishes was surprisingly better than many restaurants out there or even the highly regarded 東寶小館 in North Point.
The atmosphere is very Dai Pai Dong

ReplyDeleteI guess 東寶小館 got too much coverage from Anthony Bourdain, TV shows, media personalities like 歐陽應霽 over the years that it has lost its luster. This looks like a place I could seriously enjoy, and that price for all that food is a steal. You just made all HK expats worldwide drool and homesick :-)
ReplyDelete@紅叮 - thanks for letting me know, let me try the Fried Chicken next time! And I still want to try the Ramen ya :P
ReplyDelete@Beef No Guy - yeh I think Tung Po is a little too proud of their achievement. In fact, I used to work right next to it and back then, it wasn't as crazy busy and cocky as nowadays! Granted some items there are gimmicky, like the Duck Lotus Rice, Squid Ink balls, Durian dumplings, etc.
This place is much less pretentious and what I like about this place the most is that - the food isn't drowned in oil!!! A lot of Canto places are too well lubricated ! :P
I stumbled upon 滿漢小廚 in Yuen Long, and from someone from the US of A, I thought it was very good. We ordered scrambled eggs with "white rice fish", broccoli with squid, and salt and pepper ribs. Not greasy at all, but very tasty, and very "home made." Anyone else went to this place?
ReplyDeleteMy wife did comment about the location, right next to a large site where they were doing construction work.
