Duchess of Spotswood - (Melbourne)

Duchess of Spotswood is a newer style of café diner which is only open for breakfast until late lunch.  Found in a slightly remote suburb across the Westgate bridge in Spotswood very close to Williamstown,  fortunately it is found only 3 minutes walk from the Spotswood Train Station.  So it does not necessitate a car to travel to here if any willing customers have enough will to come try it out!    It’s said to be run by an Ex-Michelin Starred Chef Andrew Gale, who’d used to work in the UK and other European restaurants before arriving back in Melb.  Ok that’s enough about the introduction,  I’m sure you’re bored and just really wanting to see the photos and coffee and food descriptions!

Cappuccino -  Small Batch ‘Candyman Blend’
This made by a very experienced Barista was great,  with a rounded mouthfeel of molass and just a hint of dark berries.  Made on the La Marzocco,  the same blend tastes really different from the roaster’s own shop @ Auction Rooms.   Can’t work this out!

Caffe Latte -
Using the same blend, said to be slightly weaker in coffee taste but the milk was nicely sweet and creamy.

Royal Fanfare – $18.50
The Smoked Trumpeter was slightly smoky and cooked well and paired with eggplant Romesco.
Crispy pork neck pieces on top of the fish were surprisingly very fun to eat and memorable for their crunch and super aromatic pork oil taste,     The House smoked pork pancetta were toasted onto the sourdough bread directly which was a very nice move!  Came with nicely cooked Crumbed poached eggs and pretty herbs.  Can’t beat this for a late breakfast !

Duchess of Pork – $18.50
Crispy pork jowl with fried eggs, the jowl had a nice crisp skin and was nicely interlaced with marbling and moist inside,  very addictive!    The rich truffle sauce wasn’t that truffle-y but a nice addition to make the dish 3 dimensional but could be much improved and with a bigger portion.  This could do with a little more something just to counter the richness of the dish composition,  like some nice salad on the side.   But otherwise was cooked really well.  Addictive,  but missing some certain attentions to finer details

Crispy Pork Jowl -
This was gorgeous and worth a trip on its own merit !
Needs to be more balanced overall in composition…

Some house made tarts and cakes -
A little remote to find,  but the food is sensibly great and done with heart, but was not perfect,
and the coffee meanwhile was right up there with the best of Melbourne !
