Mango Tree - Valentines Day Buffet ( HK )

Mango Tree at Elements branch,  is hosting a once off only Valentines Day buffet on the 14th of February.    Some media foodies and bloggers were invited to try out some of their buffet dishes and hoping to spread the word out.   Starting from $598 – $638 per person with unlimited Yellow Curry Crabs,  Fried Prawn Cakes,  Pork Ribs to over 30 other items plus 1 drink each,  plus a killer view of that Victoria Harbour,   this is definitely becoming a very viable option for V-Day.   Most restaurants opt to slaughter you and drain your wallet dry,  just because they can so see through you having a Hong Kong girlfriend who is always demanding and expected only the best..

Grilled Thai Pork Neck -
Offered as unlimited of course as this is a Buffet after all albeit only for 1 day.  It was grilled well but could be softer upon bites.  But pretty acceptable..  ~  7/10

Thai Prawn Cakes -
Actually was impressed to hear that these really well-fried prawn cakes can be eaten endlessly on the night.   I love prawn cakes so much personally.    My only concern is when will the supplies stop?   Knowing Hong Kong too well,  many buffets cut off the premium items when quota has been breached.    That is my pertinent question because if I refer you to here,  obviously I want you to experience the same experience!    ~  8/10

Thai ‘Larb’ Pork Salad -
Pretty spicy pork mince in salad with herbs and mint.
This is a typical Thai dish and the version here was mid spicy.   ~  8/10

Prawns and Calamari Salad -
This is as expected.   With a bit of chilliness and Thai herbs.   Could do with some more sour hot dressing personally ~  6.9/10

Thai style Hainanese Chicken -
With Rice served.  All you can eat.  The chicken was cooked well but the rice was more like white rice than Turmeric rice.   Chili Sauce dip was like a puree,  thick and hot.  ~  7/10

Yellow Curry Flower Crabs,  made with 6 Egg Yolks -
Served as unlimited during Valentines Day buffet.  This was amazing especially with the yolky sauce.   Defers from the normal Mud Crab version but this one is sweeter and light.  Really viscous curry sauce  ~  9/10

River Prawn cooked 2 Ways with Herbs and Grilled -  *1 Serving between Couples
This is the only course not refillable.   The one with fried herbs and lemongrass was amazingly fragrant and addictive and begging for rice.   The grilled one was ok.  ~  9/ 10 & 7/10

Sweet & Sour Fish – Unlimited
This was as expected,  with a crisp batter and plenty of sour sauce and diced vegetables and mangoes.  One plate was better than the other,  this uses Grouper fish  ~  7/10

Grilled Pork Ribs -
These were very tender and well marinated in a Thai accent.   Definitely encore!   ~  8/10

Tom Yum Soup -
Quite gravy like fragrant and also acidic.  Apparently this version is not as hot as the normal version,  loved the prawns in it however.   ~  7.5/10

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Tree Ripened Coconut Drink – $58
Apparently Mango Tree insists on picking only the best coconuts off the trees just as they are ready.   This definitely was the case as it was super intense in sweetness and flavour.  Must order!   ~  10/10

Strawberry Layered Cakes -
There is also a Pandan Coconut milk version available in the buffet.

Coconut Milk with Red Water Chestnut Soup -
This special dessert carries a unique flavor hidden within,   it is almost impossible to guess right away as that element is not usually edible by humans…  Hint hint!   A really powerful but balanced dessert,  apparently this style of aromatic dessert is preferred by the Kings in Thailand.  No spoilers here but it will spring a surprise!  ~  8/10

Vine Ripened Mango and Coconut Milk on Sticky Rice -
The mangoes,  like the above Coconut Juice,  are also picked only when Vine-ripened.
I never fully believed this concept until I got to experience it first hand in South America when picking fruit off trees myself comparing Vine-Ripened vs Brown Paper Bag ripened,  the difference is humongous and processing tedious as by then you will be fighting with birds and insects!   This rice wass done really well as usual,  but one has to appreciate them for sticking to their principles when picking the right mangoes and even in a buffet setting.   ~  10/10

Lychee Ice Cream -
Was told this is really flavorful as usual,  but unfortunately I had to leave the premise early.   Overall,   this Valentine’s Day Only Buffet is very tempting…  To the point I even contemplate coming back on the day,  and customers will also receive a Strawberry Fresita drink to help kick off the night.     5:45pm to 8pm is $598 Per Person,  8:30pm to 10:45pm round is $638.  If you and your partner love fiery exotic food and can polish off a lot of food,  this is a really good bargain!
