Senryo Sushi 千両 - (Hong Kong)

This is my 2nd post on this respectable Sushi Train shop which originated from Japan,  my previous reviews can be found here.    I can totally imagine some people to think that it’s miserable to eat weekly at a sushi train shop here  (苦笑)!   Reiterating again what really lured me to come back again and again,  it’s to do with their chunky grated wasabi,  matcha powder green teas with unlimited refills and also their grilled Flounder Skirts (炙り縁側).   It’s all relative in the end, as you could pay many thousands of dollars in HK for a grand sushi meal but the seafood neta and rice shari and especially knifing skills will still not be up to Japan’s best standards.   I  would rather take a step back and choose a cheaper alternative and save some dosh to fly over to Japan again. soon.   Senryo fortunatley fills in the gaps in-between for being fresh enough!

Live Shellfishes are the Central Theme here today in January Winter -

Tamago with Yuzu,  Spicy Tuna with Avocado,  Fried Shrimps -
The shrimps were the best and sweet crispy!   The Egg tamago here are famous for being freshly made,  it’s usually a little too dense but quite balanced between sweetness and savouriness.  The spicy tuna was nowhere near as good as a previous encounter,  it was disappointing as it lacked flavours and punch this time around.  ~  6/10

Yamazaki 12 Years Whisky -
This was decent enough,  although nowadays I don’t rate whiskies served in Tumbler Glasses anymore…  Read why I came to this conclusion on this Riedel review:  Riedel Wine & Whisky Glasses !

Raw Japan imported Hokkigai, Geoduck, Tsubugai – with their Skirt made into Cucumber Rolls.
Salmon Belly,  Shima Aji,  Tuna Toro,  Botan Ebi Prawn:
Personally the Hokkigai was the best,  relative to its true potential (Bottom Middle photo).   Usually boiled hokkigais are served in buffets or overseas Japanese restaurants appearing so firm and reddish but here it was crunchy and fresh for once.  Although HK is not as good as Japan by average statistics in terms of freshest seafood or even compared to Taiwan   ~ 7/10

Grilled Prawn -
This was a little too mushy for me.  I can accept Langoustines or Scampis to be softer as that is their natural self.  But not when it is prawns.  Though the taste was ok decent & buttery.  ~  5/10

Fried Hiroshima Oyster,  Fried Soft Shell Crab & Calamari Cake -
The best is no doubt the Fried Oyster,  it was so HOT and plump.   Soft Shell Crab was a disaster as it was tasteless.  The fried Calamari Cake tasted more like Fish Cake.  Skip these latter 2 is my advice.   ~  Oyster 8/10,  others 5/10

Sea Urchin,  Negitoro with Urchin,  Shirako Cod Sperm Sac,
Spicy Tuna & Hokkaido Oyster Sushi -
The Hokkaido sea urchin was the stand out.
The Shirako was a little limp even though it’s still within winter but the flight from Japan to HK has accelerated it’s detrimental effect.   The Spicy Tuna nigiri sushi was also disappointing just like the above Spicy Tuna with Avocado starter,  it was kinda tasteless tonight in this store.   The Hokkaido Oyster somehow made up for it as it was super plump and had a sweet sea-water taste.   Overall,  the rice shari was held too firm and previous Senryo visits yielded much better meals.  ~  6/10 to 7/10

Kegani Crab Miso Soup -
Mine was excellent just as I always remembered it to be,  full of crab essence and daikon sweetness.  But some other bloggers received soups which we shared to experiment,  became either too salty or lacking the essential crab sweetness.   I was one of the luckier ones tonight!  Yay.   ~  8/10

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAFlamed Grilled Engawa (Grilled Flounder Skirt ) -
This is one of the must orders here.

I always have to have this over my so many visits,  only because you won’t find these in High End Sushi shops by default.  Much like Shako mantis shrimps.  ~  8/10

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASushi Platter -
Usually decent but not excetional.  ~  7/10

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWasabi -
At the beginning these were more mild and sweet.  Nowadays I think they mix in the pre-frozen grated wasabi with more hot wasabi diluted powder.  Any self respecting Sashimi and Sushi shop should serve anything but powdered wasabi which are too pungent.  I am happy to take this compromise here with a hybrid version!   ~  7/10

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERATuna Toro on a good day -
It really depends on your visit… sometimes you get non-fatty and oxidized versions.  On this particular day it was good value. It’s always a gamble at Senryo.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAChocolate Brownie -
One of the must order desserts here.   It’s one of the big surprises in town,  but some of their desserts here are better than those offered inside hotels or patisserie shops in HK.  ~ 9/10
