Aurora – ♕♕♕♕ (Macau)

Michelin 1 Stars

Aurora is a recently crowned 2010 Michelin 1 Star Italian restaurant in Macau, a short 1-hour trip from Hong Kong Island. It specialises in Puglia cuisine, which usually sees more olive oil and seafood influences in the dishing composition.  The difference between lunch and dinner menus vary quite substantially, dissimilar to many Michelin restaurants in Spain and parts of Europe which serve consistently high quality lunches and dinner throughout.

The Head Chef of Aurora has trained in multiple Europe-based Michelin Starred Restaurants and this training is reflected on his Night Time Menu, highlighting a few dishes aligned with modern Italian-European cuisine and even revealing a slight molecular edge.  The 3 Courses Lunch menu being much simpler in execution however, is still quite extensive with choices and worth sampling, its also a relative bargain at only MOP/HKD $198 only, or less than USD 30.  (One of the optional Wagyu Beef dishes during lunch would have costed more than the 3 Courses Lunch combined, when ordered a la carte.)  A follow-up dinner revisit is certainly on my agenda…

2007 Orvieto Classico, Santa Cristina, Umbria.  Grapefruits like refreshing ~
7/10

Calamari alla Piastra, Vinegrette all’aioli, Pomodori Semi Secchi,
Salsa al Nero di Seppia e Astice -
Grilled Calamari aioli with semi-dried tomatoes, Squid ink and Lobster Sauce was presented beautifully.  A very well balanced dish and highly enjoyable (if the calamari was warmer than cold, it’ll be even much better)  ~  7.5/10

Insalata Panzanella Toscana con Gamberoni, Grigliati e Formaggio Fresco -
Salad of grilled prawns in Tuscan Panzanella style, with fresh cheese. Refreshing,
but not spectacular ~ 6/10

Linguine con Ostriche, Broccolini, Colatura di Alici e Pane Tostato -
Linguine with oysters, broccolini heads & anchovy juice, with toasted bread.
Cooked pretty right and hot, even briny, unfortunately 2 of the oysters were UNFRESH and carried a strange taste.  Nevertheless, it was ok-good ~  6.5/10

Agnolotti di Caprino, Brodo di Pera, Cubetti de Fegato,
Grasso e Scaglie di Mandorla –
Goat cheese Agnolotti in Pear Broth, Pan seared Foie Gras with sliced Almond came out slightly too ‘cold’, and sounded more enticing than it tasted.  The Agnolotti skin was thick and cold, the Foie Gras was barely warm but nicely balance by pear sauce ~ 7/10

Filetto di Manzo Giapponese A-3 con Crema di Soncino, Carciofi Stufati e Olive Nere -
Japanese Wagyu Beef Fillet with Watercress puree, seasonal artichoke and black olives.
Done very well, and was surprised by its taste and marbling level, as well as cooking accuracy in terms of timing ~  9/10

280620105188
Filetto di Rana Pescatrice al Pepe Nero Cotto Sottovuoto con Broccolini e
Salsa di Fagiolini -
Monkfish fillet in black pepper cooked sous-vide then grilled, with broccolini and green beans sauce.  When this arrived I was a bit lost as it looked quite different from my expectations.  The sauce was great, but the fish was steaming hot and over-cooked ~ 5/10

This herb is quite lemony like.

Tartelletta di Pera al Vino Rosso e Crema di Castagne alla Cannella -
Tart with red wine poached pear and cinnamon chestnut cream,
home made Vanilla ice cream ~ 9/10

Looks simple as a dessert concept, but tasted lovely.
Simple things are sometimes better and holds an appeal!
