Tong Kee specialises in made-to-Order Rice Paper Rolls filled with a variety of ingredients. Surprisingly, its the only shop in Hong Kong which dares to specialise in this singular item, selling nothing else on the menu other than a Congee. Known in Cantonese as Cheung Fan, its a highly regarded Dim Sim dish during Breakfast, Lunch or Supper. This shop is inundated with foreign Tourists and Locals alike each day, despite its odd and inaccessible location.
Its not too far from Jordan’s Temple Street however if you know the right directions, all of about 8-10 minutes walk, so its well worth the detour to see what Hong Kong locals come here to enjoy. Beware that opening hours are strictly during the Evening only, from 7:30pm to 3:00am. They are closed Wed and Sundays. Food quality varies as after 3 separate visits, we found the rice paper crepe layer to be overly thick on some occasions, whereas other times its much more enjoyable and opaquely thin! So come here expecting to take a gamble with food inconsistencies, but its nevertheless recommended.
Situated in some Old Rural area part of Touristy Jordan,
its a neglected part of the city…
菜乾陳腎豬骨粥
Dried Vegetables, Duck Gizzards and Pork Bone with Meat & Peanuts Congee -
These ingredients all contribute to its grand sum of final flavours, together with a well boiled rice-congee base, without external and artificial starches to thicken it up ~ 7.5/10

Thank you for this writeup. I first learned of this place from 歐陽應霽's HK flavors book (Taiwan edition) and wondered why he thought it was superb. I'm sure a lot of taxi drivers make their way here for a quick snack before hitting the road again.
ReplyDeleteYes exactly right. This is like the Taxi Drivers heaven. Surprisingly I saw a fair few foreigners coming to here, I wonder where they got the information to visit here?
ReplyDeleteIts not easy to find to be honest even for a local. GPS might help as u need to go past an underground tunnel somehow. There's some Vietnamese Bahn Mi and Restaurants around here which are also famous, but I haven't tried as yet!
